News: Gantz Stars to Attend Screenings in Japan, U.S. on Same Day

The Oricon Style website confirmed that Ken’ichi Matsuyama and Kazunari Ninomiya, the lead actors in the two manga-based live-action Gantz films, will appear in person at the world premiere of the first film in Hollywood on January 20. In addition, for the first time in the Japanese film industry, the stars will appear at advance screenings on the same day in both the United States and Japan. The announcement was made during a special event on Monday in Tokyo.

The two actors will first appear on stage at a screening in Tokyo’s Roppongi district on the morning of January 20 (Japan Time). Then, they will fly to Hollywood for the world premiere, which will also take place on January 20 (Pacific Standard Time).

The Hollywood event will be at the Mann’s Chinese 6 theater. A total of 334 theaters throughout the United States will screen the film and simulcast the actors’ live interview from Hollywood that same day.

The film will open nationwide in Japan on January 29. The second film based on Hiroya Oku’s Gantz manga will open on April 23.

Interest: Signed K-On!! Guitar Gets 9,999,999,999-Yen ‘Bid’ (Updated)

A seller named “euf02us” placed a guitar signed by the K-ON!! anime’s voice cast on auction onYahoo! Japan on January 5, and a user placed a 9,999,999,999 Yen (about US$120 million) “bid” on Monday morning.

Last year, the Japanese convenience store chainLAWSON ran a K-ON!! Fair promotional campaign from October 19 to November 29. People who spent a certain amount at LAWSON stores could go online with numbers from their store receipts to see if they won prizes. By the second day of the campaign, LAWSON’s computer and mobile phone home pages received over 1 million accesses in one day, and the company’s website was temporarily unreachable for many users.

The campaign’s top-level “A Prizes” were five replicas of the main character Yui’s guitar. All five cast members who voiced the anime’s Ho-kago Tea Time Band signed the guitars. Each guitar also came with a limited-edition hard case (with an imprinted HTT logo and key), set of clear stickers, shielded cord, tuning wrench, soft case, manual, and warranty certificate.

Thanks to the questionable bids, the seller plans to cancel the current auction on Tuesday and re-offer the guitar at a later date.

Interest: Manga/Anime’s Tiger Mask Inspires Another Gift-Giver

On the morning of New Year’s Day, a security guard discovered a stack of six gift-boxed backbags on the doorstep leading to the Odawara Child Guidance Center in Kanagawa Prefecture. Attached to the three black backpacks and three red backpacks was a note that began, “A New Year’s gift — Naoto Date.” Date is the alter ego of Tiger Mask, a manga/anime pro wrestler
who fights for children in an orphanage.

About 200 kilometers (120 miles) to the north, a mysterious donor had left 10 30,000-yen (about US$360) backpacks at a child guidance center in Gunma Prefecture on Christmas morning. Like the six backpacks in Odawara, those 10 backpacks in Gunma were left in the name of Tiger Mask’s alter ego.

The gift giver in Odawara left a letter that read, “The donation of backpacks in Gunma last year moved me deeply. My heart skipped a beat when I heard the news. Thinking I might do something as well, I offer these gifts. May the Tiger Mask movement live on.”

The Odawara Child Guidance Center plans to give the backpacks to new arrivals at the local orphanages and other children.
